Maximize your curb appeal: Updated!

Maximize your curb appeal: Updated! Driving through Los Angeles neighborhoods and any like neighborhoods you will notice houses that can use a little sprucing up. We spend some much time on the inside of our homes that we forget when the outside needs attention. Curb appeal is important no matter if your home is on the market or not. Maybe you have just neglected the outside as you don’t have the time or budget to vamp it up. Exterior design is one of our specialties. Here are our top 1 day & 3 day projects, updated, that range in price, pick the one that best suits your needs and give it a try.

1 day Curb Appeal Projects

    • Dress up your front door – try adding some paint to fancy your entry way. Try a bright color like red to really make a statement.
    • Replace old hardware with new complimentary hardware – For instance replace your house numbers, door locks, mailbox and lighting with new designs.
    • Create symmetry by placing even lights or plants on either side of the door or walkway. The eye will always be drawn to misplaced or uneven objects, give your home the symmetry it needs.
    • Install outdoor lights along the walkway or driveway – you can even purchase solar powered lights to be eco-friendly.
    • Renew planter beds – cutting away the dead plants will help give more life to the plants you have left. Nothing screams uncared for than dead plants and yards lacking maintenance.
    • Replace gutters and downpours – At least check to make sure your existing ones are still attached to the house.
    • Build window boxes! The flowers will give your home a flash of fresh color and a pop your window needs.
    • flower boxes
    • Create a walkway to your front door, if you don’t have one already. Use materials for under $50, like using stone forms and pouring concrete.
    • faux path exterior
    • Wash your house – yes pressure wash your home and you may get the same result as you would if you repainted. Most homes can be pressure washed, but check your exterior to determine if this is right for you.
    • Give your garage doors a fresh coat of paint. Garage doors get neglected over time, freshen them up to give them a facelift they deserve.

10-paint-garage-door

  • This may sound silly – but mow your lawn. Simple lawn care goes a long way when dealing with curb appeal and exterior design.
  • Add patio furniture to your exterior for a fast look within minutes.
  • patio furniture

There are many more projects that will take less than a day to complete and will really add that extra oomph your home needs.

3 day Curb Appeal Projects

These few projects will take more than a day to complete and may require some professional help, though they will be more than enjoyable in the end.

  •  Renew paint, siding, and trim – Give your house a facelift with a new paint job. Dated and fading exterior paint may be holding your house back from rocking the appealing side. Look into paint colors that will accentuate your home. Choosing a color that is really loud may not be such a great idea either.
  • Add shutters or accent trim – it’s the little details that really show you care. Exterior shutters can be hung and painted to accent your homes color and charm.
  • Dress up the driveway – a new drive way is worth a thousand words. Make the drive way the grand entrance with new concrete or stone. Even adding lighted columns at the bottom of the driveway can make your house a big deal on the block.
  • driveway
  • Add a porch or portico – Creating more for the eye to look out is very beneficial. Not only will this added feature be something nice to look at, you and your family can benefit from it as well. Try adding a pergola to an existing porch or adding a portico to your front entry way.
  • Hardscape and water features – The newest craze if showing off your water features in your front yard versus your back yard now. Contact a remodeling and design company to give your front yard a hardscape and possibly a water feature that is top of town.
  • 81-green-mailbox
  • Last but not least – adding stone veneers or slate tiles to the exterior walls can really add the look of luxury and elegance for a low price.

No matter what project or projects you decide to try, never forget that the outside of your home needs as much attention as the inside. For all of your remodel and design needs, you can contact us for your free estimate. 1.877.642.7772

Why would I want Concrete Countertops?

Why would I want Concrete Countertops? Concrete Countertops are Durable

Concrete is extremely hard and resists chipping and scratching. It will last for decades with a minimum amount of basic maintenance. You probably won’t have to replace it until you’re ready for a new look in the kitchen or bathroom decades down the road.

They’re Heat Resistant

If you love to cook, concrete kitchen countertops will prove to be an asset. They stand up to the heat of a cooktop as well as hot pots and pans. Concrete bathroom countertops won’t be harmed by hot hair tools like a styling iron or straightener.

Concrete Counters are Easy to Maintain

You’ll need to reseal your countertops every few years, but it’s a quick and easy job. When properly done, the counters won’t stain or harbor bacteria. They’ll clean up quickly with mild soap and warm water.

They Give an Upscale Look to Your Home

These counters will change your image of concrete. If you haven’t seen many concrete countertops, you owe it to yourself to contact an installer and take a look at their portfolio. What can be done with them is truly amazing, and the results add class and distinction to the kitchen

I have seen some great tutorials on DIY concrete countertops, and I have seen some not so great tutorials. Below are a few of the better DIY Concrete countertop tutorials out there that are fool proof. These countertops look great, and are very durable.

Even though it is DIY, it doesn’t have to look like you did it yourself. Do your homework and watch videos before you try and do this.

Bathroom Remodeling 101

Bathroom Remodeling 101 The bathroom remodel will be the best remodel investment next to the kitchen. Knowing this ahead of time, you should know your options and wants for this room before starting this project.  From tubs, showers, vanities, lighting and materials for counters and floors: you have much to think about before gutting your old bathroom. Let us take you through some of our recent bathroom remodels from this past year and give you some inspiration.

Your new bathroom doesn’t have to be designed anything like your old one. (Unless that’s what you want) Take our Grand Master bathroom for example: This out dated bathroom didn’t suit our client’s style or need for space. We re-arranged the bathroom to give ample enough space to even add a separate shower. With the right design you can make any space, small or large, functional.

Having a functional counter space in your bathroom is important as well. It’s never been a problem to have too much space, only not enough. His and hers sinks are becoming a standard feature in most bathrooms, but if you are remodeling a guest bathroom- one sink will work just fine. In this featured master bathroom we added a double sink with floating shelves. We even added a custom makeup vanity to utilize that odd space that would have been forgotten. Never underestimate what a new design can do for your bathroom or for any remodel.

IMG_5067

Soaking tub and separate shower? Shower & tub combo? Trying to add a shower to a small powder room? The choices are endless, and with new showers today you can get a corner shower to fit in the smallest spaces. I would consider the main use of the bathroom, and decide if you need something extravagant in the guest bathroom, or if you can spend the extra dollar on your master bath. Claw foot tubs and spa jetted tubs are available in many shapes and sizes, and are being argued to save water. Maybe the assumption is that you will take less baths and save more water? We’re not sure, but choosing ecofriendly materials and options is always good for your pocket and the environment.

Bathroom-pasadena-4-675x464

Materials used in your bathroom should be water and moisture resistant. We can all thank the changing times and mold for getting rid of the carpeted bathrooms. For our following bathroom we chose a material for the floor that we used in the shower and around the tub to give the bathroom a seamless look, but spiced things up with a detailed shower stall and black vanity. We created an extra-long ledge around one side of the tub to act as a bench in the shower.

bathroom03

Small bathroom remodels can be just a grand as a larger master bathroom. Our talented team can design and build your dreams. The following guest bathroom displays a shower stall tiled from floor to ceiling, as well as a pony wall to give the toilet area more privacy, but you could opt instead for an all glass stall minus the wall.

Luxury isn’t just a large home anymore

smart-home.jpg

Luxury isn’t just a large home It takes more these days than just a large home, to define the true meaning of luxury.  And Luxury homes are popping up all over the Los Angeles remodel scene. The word luxury brings to mind plenty of conveniences such as, pools, bathrooms with built in towel warmers, in-home gyms that include the newest equipment, backyard tennis courts, game rooms, and fully-stocked kitchens with warming drawers and wine cellars? But what are the items that luxury home buyers want the most?  What is a luxury homebuyer looking for when shopping for their new abode? How can you make your home as luxurious as possible during your next remodel?

cream-wallpaper-look-bathroom-tiles-700x476

Here are the top luxuries people are looking for to ensure you aren’t adding amenities that no one is looking at.

A home theater is great, but luxury home buyers are looking for more than just a room with a large screen and comfy seats. You will need to step it up a notch and get yourself an IMAX home theater if you want to wow the crowd, the luxury crowd that is. Watching Hollywood block busters from the comfort of your home is now possible, with a hefty price tag that is. IMAX will bring the best theater to your door for $3 million dollars and change. If this isn’t something you think you have prepared in your remodel budget, that’s ok, wait a few years and the price may decrease. Until then we can continue to shell out big bucks for the movie theater or wait until it shows up at your local Redbox.

imax

Speaking about technology, the luxury amenity next on our list is a home that is fully managed, monitored and controlled by a smart phone or tablet. Hence the name: “smart home.” Control the temperature, light setting, security system, door and window locks, sound system, t.v’s, and more, with the touch of one button from where ever you are. The digital world is taking over and people want technology improved homes. Think about technology and innovations before you start your next luxury project. Luxury is all about making life easier, better and being able to do things faster. Such luxury means you do not have to open or close your curtains. That’s right; homes are becoming equipped with motorized blackout curtains or shades. Why? Because this is what home owners think will make their life easier. I guess it seems nice to have your curtains set to close or open at a certain time, or pressing a button to close the shades when the afternoon glare is obscuring your t.v show rather than getting up to do it yourself. Have your smart phone control your curtains too while you are at it.

So you have guessed it, luxury comes with a cost. Keep in mind that these are the top luxury amenities, but there are thousands that are affordable and worth the renovation.

How to build a Home Theater in a few steps

modern-media-room.jpg

How to build a Home Theater in a few steps modern-media-room

These days home comfort is a must to a happy life. There isn’t anything more comfortable then a movie theater right in your very home. No large crowds, dirty seats, and overpriced goodies. Get the quality of the movie theater in your home for your own personal enjoyment. There are 8 key steps that you must take to get to this movie theater level.

Steps to a Home Movie Theater

Location: Isn’t location always the first step? A good size for a home theater is 20ft by 13 feet if you are planning on doing this as a home addition. If you are looking to use what you have already, opt for a spare room that is at least 12ft by 12ft. You will want a location that is secluded from the rest of the home as to not disturb the surrounding space with noise. You will need to pay special attention insulation with this project. A rating of R30 is standard for the ceiling, floor and exterior wall insulation, though you will want to insulate the interior walls as well. Having R11 packed into the walls can reduce noise from rocking the rest of the house but you will need more after all the wiring and sound system is installed.

Original_Sherry-Rauh-home-theater-leather-seating_s4x3.jpg.rend.hgtvcom.616.462

Surround Sound: Home movie theaters used to use a 7.1 surround sound system, though now you will want to do a 9.1 system to maximize your home theater experience. A 9.1 surround sound system merely means you have 1 subwoofer and 9 speakers.

You will want to have your speakers in these locations:

  • Center – just above or below the viewing screen
  • Left/Right – on either side of the screen at ear height
  • Front Row – two speakers in the very front of the room
  • Side Surrounds – on the side walls just behind the main row of seating
  • Rear Surrounds – on the back wall (how far apart depends on the system)

Projector: Of course you need something to watch while you listen to the great surround sound you just installed. For a realistic, large-screen theater experience, you'll need to pre-wire a projector system. This involves just two cables:

  • An HDMI cable to carry high-definition video to the projector
  • A CAT5 control wire for accessing the projector with a radiofrequency (RF) remote. This will let you start your movies without pointing at the projector.

One end of these cables should extend from the ceiling at the rear of the theater, where the projector will hang. The other end should connect to your equipment hub. Be sure to pre-wire the hub with your cable or satellite feed, as well as high-speed Internet for streaming video.

Lighting: Installing appropriate lighting is an important feature for your home theater. Having remote controlled and dimmed lighting will set the atmosphere and take your home movie theater up a notch. Floor or aisle runner lighting is also a good idea to add.

Theater3_April_12_2010.23465805_large

Drywall and Final Sound Barriers: You will want to use a heavy duty drywall over your insulation, such as QuietRock Soundproof Drywall. This drywall can be very expensive and if it is over your intended budget, you can opt for regular drywall lined with sound dampening materials.

3ffcdc2d2ac568525bbe431b85ff6484

Final Touches:  Now you can install your video and sound systems, and lastly your theater style seating. A good Blu-ray player will do far more than play discs. Through a pay-per-view service like VUDU, you can stream high-definition movies off the Internet whenever you like. Some Blu-ray players also network with your personal computer, making it easy to enjoy photos, music, and home videos in your theater. Theater seating comes in a wide range of styles, including genuine leather with cup-holders in the armrests. These are the kind of seats that beckon you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the feature presentation!

Enjoy your Home Movie Theater!

Battle of the Countertops: Quartz vs Granite

Battle of the Countertops: Quartz vs Granite If you are following the kitchen trends you may have noticed that Granite countertops are becoming a thing of the past. Quart countertops are stepping into the spot light in kitchen remodels.

Here I will run you down the pros of both and you can decide for yourself.

Pros of Quartz -Durability or long-lasting nature is one of the major aspect that you should look for in a countertop. Quartz countertops are known for their durability as they are harder than most of the other countertops. Many companies give warranties with the quartz countertops. -Quartz countertops are more resistant to staining, cracking and corrosion that many of the other countertop options. As it is not porous, it is much more stronger and long-lasting. -One of the other benefits of quartz countertops is that once installed, you need not care for it. It is literally maintenance free.Quartz countertops are also mold and mildew resistant. Therefore, you can consider them food-safe and excellent to use. -As these countertops are available in myriad colors, you can find the one that suits your kitchen interior perfectly. Secondly, you can also try different color combination to get a modern and creative look. Quartz has a natural stone appearance and hence, it is suitable for every kitchen type: be it modern, classical or even the antique country types. -Cleaning quartz countertops for kitchens is easy and does not require much time. Quartz countertops can be cleaned with simply water, soap and water or with manufacturer's products (for heavy stains), at home. -Lastly, note that once installed (they do not require sealing), these countertops are hassle free.

Pros of Granite

-Granite countertops look awesome. They are oh-so-elegant and a total treat to the eye. After a long day's work, just the sight of that sleek sheet of rock in the kitchen will get you in the mood to whip up a lip-smacking dinner. -Granite is available in a variety of colors, patterns, grains and designs. Actually, the word 'variety' would be an understatement. With over 3,000 granite countertop designs available, one would have to say there is a wide variety in the variety of varieties available! -A granite countertop can have a polished finish or it can be left as it is to give it a more natural and unfinished look. An unfinished countertop is a good option if you prefer to have your kitchen nice and simple, whereas a polished one adds a bit of class and does enough to give your kitchen design the modern and contemporary touch that it needs. -Durability is one of the biggest advantages. Once you have finished installing a granite countertop, you can just forget about it. Its longevity and low maintenance requirements make it a favorite among homemakers. You can clean a granite countertop with normal soap or by using a strong detergent too. Most granite countertops are resistant to chemicals so you shouldn't have any problems in using a chemical based detergent. -Being highly water resistant, you do not have to worry about having spilled water or any other liquid on the countertop. All you should ensure is that you wipe it and keep it dry. This is because water or any other liquid, if left standing on the countertop for too long, may slightly stain the granite at the surface. -Countertops made from granite are heat resistant and can withstand high temperatures. At the same time, they are also resistant to a number of bacteria. If you spend some time browsing through the internet you’ll find a range of different reviews about quartz vs granite. While one homeowner will tell you that you absolutely, positively must get a quartz countertop, another reviewer will insist upon buying granite counters. When you do spend some time reading through these reviews, however, you will notice one point that stands out.

Both quartz and granite countertop owners are defending their own personal choices with a vengeance because they are so completely pleased with their counters. At the end of the day, you can walk away from these reviews knowing that choosing either quartz or granite stones will provide you with a countertop that you’ll love!

DIY Brick Fireplace Updates

Brick Fireplace DIY Updates

Don’t let that old brick fireplace be an eye sore anymore! Update your fireplace today with ideas that require little money and even less stress. 3 easy DIY updates to turn that old fireplace into a new accent to your space!

1. Built-ins: A great way to update an old brick fireplace is to utilize the space around it and create built-ins. Built-ins around a fireplace add storage and give a big design idea to look at. Once you have your shelves built-in adding a fresh coat of paint to your shelves and fireplace will give it a seamless look. For faux built-ins you can measure the space on either side of your fireplace and find book cases to fit those dimensions, and then add moulding around the top & bottom of the cases to have a custom built-in look.       builtin book cases

Though making your own Custom built-ins are easier to achieve than you may think. With some general patience and building skills you can create your very own updated fireplace. I love this blog that includes easy steps and even a list of materials to make this build even easier: I Heart Organizing.

2. Paint: If you can’t see yourself building built-ins around your fireplace and want something less time consuming to update your old brick fireplace with, let’s start with a fresh coat of paint. Painting your fireplace can take less than a few hours and cost under $50.

For this update you will need:

-          Wire brush

-          Drip cloth

-          Painters tape

-          50/50 water and vinegar mixture in spray bottle

-          Paint brush and paint color of your choice.

Before you start this project lay your drip cloth below the fireplace to protect the floor! To prepare the surface you will use the wire brush to scrub off any debris and the vinegar mixture will be your cleaning agent. After you have scrubbed the brick and cleaned it, allow ample drying time so the pain will adhere to the brick. Now you can tape off the areas you don’t want to paint. Brick is a very pourus surface, you will need more than once coat of paint to ensure there are not pin holes all over the brick. Now that you have painted your fireplace you can enjoy the fresh look it gave your room!

3. Moulding: An easy way to update an old fireplace that doesn’t need much work is to add moulding around the fireplace. Adding moulding can be done fast and easy.

Benefits and Beauty: Wall mounted fireplaces wall mounted fireplace

Get all the benefits of a traditional fireplace without having to give up a whole wall or a whole renovation budget. The newest way to get warmth and add a bold statement: wall mounted fireplaces. There is nothing wrong with traditional fireplaces – the smell of fresh burning wood is amazing. But some people don’t have the space or the budget in their home remodel to add a fireplace and chimney. Installing a wood burning fireplace and brick lined chimney and mantel can cost well over tens of thousands of dollars, not to mention a gas fireplace will cost you even more.

Now the solution for homeowners is the wall mounted fireplace. Wall mounted fireplaces can cost as low as $500. They do not require a whole wall or a whole lot of construction work like traditional fireplaces. This leaves so much more room for decorating and adding to your home’s style. You can now give your living room that cozy feeling you have always wanted or turn your bathroom into your own romantic getaway within your means.

Don’t break the bank for a fireplace or give up your dream to have them in your home.

These innovative fireplaces take up little to no space and look sophisticated. They carry so many designs you are bound to love two or three, maybe more. You can opt for a black fronted long and narrow fireplace that can be recessed to fit seamlessly into your wall giving your space a professional look. Or you may decide you want a wall mounted fireplace that protrudes from the wall with thick frosted glass and is more contemporary. No matter what you decide you will enjoy them and not regret this renovation buy.

Turn any room sleek with a wall mounted fireplace!

Wall mounted fireplaces are ventless and can be easily installed in living rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, offices, bedrooms – almost anywhere. Reducing energy they come in electric, gel and bio- ethanol fuel powered. They call for only a small hole into the wall behind the fireplace, and are easily mounted in a few hours. You may either DIY for the installation or call on a professional, either way getting your fireplace has never been easier.

No more cutting wood, ash marks on your carpet or the worry of dangerous fumes.

Low maintenance is the correct word for these stylish fireplaces. You won’t have to shovel out coals and clean soot off of walls after every use. With any fireplace there is the concern for children safety, after all it is not called a fire place for no reason. Less safety concerns than traditional fireplace, wall mounted fireplaces can be installed out of children’s reach. You will always have to monitor when using any form of fireplace or equipment that puts off fire, and having a window cracked is recommended. But with wall mounted fireplaces you no longer have fire at the reach of little hands. With all the benefits and beauty of wall mounted fireplaces I see why they are popping up everywhere.

Spazio LA will give you 3 tips to get that amazing kitchen remodel that is one of a kind and professional chef certified. ina kitchen inspiration

1. Don’t lack in creativity or color. Like Ina Garten’s kitchen white cupboards on black countertops, let your imagination take you where you want to go. Don’t be afraid to be bold, or go sleek and modern. No two chefs kitchens are the same, so make yours stand out! Tell your designer your ideas, from small to big ideas. We will work with you and create magnificent designs. Color and lighting Is important in any room, but the kitchen you want to set the right tone. Ina Garten gave us the idea of table lamps in the kitchen instead of above head lights for a warmer ambience. What’s your next big idea?  We can build anything that you can think of, pull out shelves for pots and pans, vertical cupboard dividers for baking dishes, fridge mounted t.v’s,  what every it is Spazio LA is your go to remodel & redesign company.

2. Every chef must have amazing appliances to cook on. Invest in professional grade appliances such as Viking Range. Viking Range is one of the top ranges amongst chefs to cook on at home. They offer 10 burner stoves and 2 ovens. That’s a whole lot of cooking capacity! You can bake your main course and dessert at the same time without crossing flavors, while you still have 10 burners to use. Another hot item in a chef’s kitchen is the Salamander. I’m sure you have heard about this appliance on the Cooking Channel. The Salamander is designed to cook, grill, reheat and keep food hot while you continue to cook. It’s great when you are cooking for large numbers of guests. You pour your heart into your cooking, never serve cold food again.

pullout faucet

3. Have professional waterworks and faucets that WOW. Restaurant styled pullout faucets are becoming the next big thing, for one reason: there is no pot that is too large to be washed. They offer sleek design and are versatile. Wash large objects and fill up huge pasta pots with ease. If you are big on pasta, the water spigot above the stove is a must on your kitchen remodel list. No more lifting a heavy pot to the stove again, fill that bad boy up right on the burner! One design we liked was that of Chef Guy Fiere’s kitchen. Guy has faucets controlled by foot pedals to keep things sterile and germ free. What a great idea! If you are an avid meatball aficionado then you know what it is like to need an easy place to wash your hands.

No matter if you take anything from today’s chef inspired kitchen tips, remember this: If you can dream it, we can build it.
